The Spell of Three

As the Phoenix Fighters begin to organize, they eralize that their first duty will be to try and remove the people from areas where the portals will open.  After going through several Watcher diaries, Casey determines that the only way that the team will be able to predict the appearances of portals ahead of time is if Mia, Sito, and Jesse take part in the Spell of Three, a dangerous ritual for people of common blood that allows them to predict future events.  The strain will be devastating on them physically, but the Fanel siblings agree over Aden's uneasy objections.

While Casey prepares the spell, the social tension in the House begins to gain momentum.  Lucien tries to make peace with Tranns, but she utterly refuses to accept his offer.  He asks her why she hates him and she coldly tells him that he is phoney and everything about his persona disgusts her.  The two of them get into a heated debate which turns into an all out brawl, ending abruptly when Lucien kisses Tranns.  She is so distressed that she storms out of the House, leaving him behind, utterly confused.

A young boy named Jake arrives at the Phoenix House, explaining that he has traveled to Shaldani from Catalan in order to find his best friend's sister, Sic.  Jake proves himself to be a cheerful boy, constantly dreaming of adventure and heroics.  As he endears himself to the Phoenix Fighters, Casey suggests that for a trial of the Spell of Three, the Fanel siblings attempt to locate Sic for him.  They agree.

Tranns returns to the House with a survivor she's picked up along the way, a young circus performer named Lionel.  He is assigned quarters and remains oblivious to the test run of the Spell.  Things seem uncertain at first, as the power overwhelms the siblings, but with Casey's scientific aids, Mia predicts Sic's location.  Tranns sets off, followed by Lucien and Jonas who has taken up the role of navigator.  They find Sic, a frightened mute girl, in a ruined city and take her back to the Phoenix House.

Sic explains in writing that there's a spell on her, one which she cannot describe.  As a child, she could speak, but was completely blind.  When her brother died, a force granted her the power of sight to see him, but robbed her of her speech.  The team attempt to reunite Sic and Jake in order to help them cross the border and return home, but they find that Jake has disappeared.

Lucien visits Tranns while she is working out her anger on a punching bag in the basement that she has named "Lucy."  He tells her that the kiss meant nothing.  She quickly agrees, but as the two of them separate, both seem reluctant to look away.  Meanwhile, across the hall, Aden and Mia finally admit their mutual attraction to each other and engage in their first kiss.
